Babu Owino Claims His Security Has Been Withdrawn

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino says the government has withdrawn his security following his participation in protests held in Nairobi’s CBD on Wednesday, June 25.

In a statement issued Thursday, the legislator said he took to the streets to stand with fellow Kenyans, asserting that his peaceful demonstration was in defense of the country’s future—not an act against it. He alleged that the withdrawal of his security detail was retaliation for his stance.

“Yesterday, I stood with the people to protest peacefully. Today, the government has responded by stripping away my official security,” he claimed.

Owino, affiliated with the ODM party, termed the move an attack on democracy, warning that punishing elected leaders for supporting citizens shows a government unwilling to be held accountable.

“This is not just about me. It’s a broader assault on democratic values,” he said, affirming he would not be cowed into silence.

He further declared that he draws strength from ordinary Kenyans and vowed to keep championing justice and freedom. “I will not be intimidated. My voice and the voices of Kenyans demanding justice will only grow louder,” he said.

Owino also called on the public to stay vigilant and united, stating that leaders should answer to the people rather than threaten those who stand by them.

He was among several leaders present during demonstrations marking one year since the deadly 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
