“It Is Like People Had Taken Drugs” – Charles Owino Reacts to Protestors Beating Up Police Officers
Former police spokesperson Charles Owino has condemned the violent nature of recent protests in Nairobi, describing the scenes as shocking and chaotic.
Speaking during an interview with TV47, Owino said the protests were far from peaceful, characterizing them as calculated acts of anarchy meant to destabilize public order. He claimed the demonstrations were orchestrated not just to voice grievances but to provoke and incite violence.
“What we witnessed in the city wasn’t a protest. It was well-organized chaos,” he said.
Owino expressed alarm at incidents where protestors were seen assaulting police officers, including those who were armed. He described such behavior as reckless and extremely dangerous.
“I was shocked to see civilians beating police officers,” he stated. “That’s not only irresponsible but increases the risk of fatal confrontations.”
He further suggested that some of the protestors acted irrationally, claiming their behavior resembled that of people under the influence of drugs such as bhang.
“It is like people had taken drugs,” Owino said, warning that attacking armed officers is a serious threat to public safety, as it can lead to lethal force in self-defense.
While acknowledging the constitutional right to protest, Owino urged Kenyans to express their grievances lawfully and peacefully. He reminded the public that police are trained not only to maintain order but also to defend themselves when under attack.
His remarks come amid ongoing debate around the protests, which have been marked by both peaceful demonstrations and moments of violent confrontation.
