Joho’s Star Rises as 2032 Presidential Bid Gains Traction
Former Mombasa Governor and current Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Hassan Ali Joho, is increasingly viewed as a heavyweight in Kenyan politics, with growing momentum behind a potential 2032 presidential run.
Last month, Joho convened the Coast Parliamentary Caucus in Nairobi to strategize the region’s political direction ahead of the 2027 elections—a move seen as proof of his enduring influence both at the Coast and nationally. At a public event in Kilifi County, Coast leaders from both ODM and UDA publicly endorsed Joho’s presidential aspirations. “We believe Joho has what it takes to serve as the sixth president of Kenya,” declared Rabai MP Kenga Mupe.
In response, Joho affirmed his shift from regional to national focus. “I now serve the country as a Cabinet Secretary, but my ultimate goal is the presidency. Unity—across the Coast and the nation—is essential,” he told supporters.
Joho’s political journey began in 2004 with a by-election bid in Kisauni; after an initial loss, he captured the parliamentary seat in 2007 and later became Mombasa’s first governor. Known for his close alliance with ODM leader Raila Odinga—who has praised Joho’s loyalty—he solidified his reputation through high-profile confrontations with the Jubilee government, most notably steering ODM to victory in the 2016 Malindi by-election.
Despite mounting endorsements, critics question the depth of his grassroots support. Lawyer Anania Mwaboza argues Joho’s strength hinges on Raila’s backing and notes a downturn in the social programs that once rallied the Coast community. Nonetheless, Joho remains undeterred, leaning on seasoned allies and a compelling narrative as he courts the nation’s highest office.
