Nyeri Dad Emotionally Speaks after Son is Killed by Stray Bullet While Working Out in Gym

A family in Karatina, Nyeri County, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Kenneth Ouma, a young man who was fatally struck by a stray bullet while exercising at a local gym during the June 25 Gen Z memorial protests.

According to eyewitness accounts, Ouma was inside Power House Gym when a bullet fired from outside pierced through a window and hit him in the neck. He died instantly.

Levis Adaki, a gym trainer and Ouma’s colleague, described the terrifying moment: “We heard gunshots and immediately hit the ground. By the time I called out for him to lie down, it was too late—he was already bleeding, holding his neck.”

Ouma, who had recently completed his studies, had only been working at the gym for two months before the tragic incident. His father, Patrick Wafula, expressed his deep sorrow, saying he had pinned great hopes on his son’s future.

“It’s heartbreaking. My son had just started his life. This was his first job—and now he’s gone,” Wafula said emotionally.

Wafula demanded justice and questioned the need for a post-mortem, noting that the cause of death was obvious. “The bullet is there. Even the OCS confirmed it. What more is needed?” he asked.

As of June 27, 2025, the death toll from the June 25 protests had reached 15. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported that over 60 people had been arrested, although concerns were raised about unrecorded detentions.

In a separate incident related to the protests, Fred Wamale, a security guard at KPLC’s Stima Plaza, was also killed by a stray bullet. He had reported to work as usual and was not involved in the demonstrations. Disturbing images of his final moments circulated widely online, igniting public grief and anger.
