Police arrest 72 people over looting, vandalism in Eldoret
Authorities in Eldoret have apprehended 72 individuals, including two women, linked to large-scale looting and property damage during Wednesday’s youth-led demonstrations. The damage is estimated to run into millions of shillings.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed that the suspects, aged between 20 and 45, were arrested from various informal settlements around Eldoret town. They are currently being held at Eldoret Central Police Station and are expected to appear in court tomorrow.
Mwanthi stated that officers recovered several stolen items, including household electronics, mattresses, gas cookers, cooking oil, blankets, furniture, and utensils — most of which were taken from a supermarket in Tairi Mbili area along the Eldoret-Webuye highway. These recovered items will serve as evidence in court.
The suspects, pretending to be part of the Gen Z protest movement, reportedly took advantage of the unrest to carry out the looting.
Additionally, police are pursuing more individuals caught on CCTV engaging in theft and vandalism in the central business district and surrounding areas.
In a separate incident, seven officers from Kamkunji Police Station narrowly escaped death when their lorry was torched by protesters along the Eldoret-Webuye highway. The officers, including the driver, had to flee the burning vehicle and hitch a ride to avoid being attacked by the angry crowd.
Commander Mwanthi revealed that seven officers were injured while trying to protect businesses. One officer, who suffered a skull injury, remains in critical condition at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital’s ICU.
What started as a peaceful protest quickly escalated into violent confrontations between demonstrators and police, forcing law enforcement to use tear gas to disperse the crowds.
