Protests begin in Mombasa, Kisii, Kitengela, Nakuru and Nairobi

Protests erupted across several Kenyan towns and cities on the morning of Wednesday, June 25, as youth-led demonstrations gained momentum in Mombasa, Kisii, Kitengela, Nakuru, and Nairobi. Protesters, mostly from the Gen Z generation, took to the streets with placards and chants demanding justice for those killed during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.

In Mombasa, demonstrators converged early near key city streets, holding placards with messages like “Ruto Must Go,” “Justice for the Fallen,” and “We Are Peaceful.” Many were dressed in black or carried black flags, a growing symbol of mourning and civil resistance. The protests began with prayers at ACK Cathedral at around 8:00 a.m., after which participants marched into the streets, some laying flowers and lighting candles at spots associated with victims of last year’s demonstrations—especially along Moi Avenue.

Kisii witnessed a large turnout at the town centre, where thousands rallied for justice and government accountability, chanting slogans that demanded reform.

In Kitengela, groups of youths took to major roads, attracting the attention of both residents and authorities. The mood was assertive but largely peaceful.

In Nakuru, crowds assembled along Moi Avenue, pressing for transparency and calling for the resignation of several top government officials linked to economic mismanagement.

Meanwhile, in Nairobi, protesters flooded the Central Business District, with local media—particularly K24 TV—broadcasting live footage of demonstrators being closely followed by journalists. The scenes showed growing numbers of youth marching, raising placards, and demanding reform.

The nationwide demonstrations served as both a memorial for lives lost in previous protests and a renewed call for accountability, justice, and meaningful government reform.
