Ruto Cabinet Approves Nairobi Northern Bypass Dualing
President William Ruto’s Cabinet has approved the long-anticipated dualing of the Nairobi Northern Bypass in a move aimed at reducing persistent traffic congestion and improving road safety for commuters.
According to a Cabinet brief released on June 24, 2025, the government will upgrade the 20.2-kilometre stretch from a single to a dual carriageway. The road links Ruaka in Kiambu County to Ruiru, serving as a critical connector between the Eastern and Western Bypasses.
“The upgrade is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, and boost access to economic hubs, industrial zones, and essential services in Nairobi and Kiambu counties,” the statement noted.
Key Features of the Project
The dualing project is set to deliver a significant infrastructure facelift, including:
- Eight interchanges
- Modern overpasses and underpasses
- Dedicated lanes for pedestrians and cyclists
- Improved drainage systems
- Upgrades to adjoining roads
Currently the only single-lane bypass in Nairobi, the Northern Bypass is now poised for a transformation that aligns with the government's Vision 2030 goals and ongoing investment in national infrastructure.
Once completed, the project is expected to ease transport across major urban and peri-urban zones, stimulate economic activity, and enhance commuter safety.
