Who Is Mukunji — And Why Was the MP Arrested by Anti-Terror Police?

In a dramatic turn of events that has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s political circles, Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, popularly known simply as Mukunji, was arrested on Monday, July 7, 2025, by officers from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU). His sudden detention has sparked widespread debate, confusion, and anger across the country.

But who exactly is Mukunji—and why is he now in the crosshairs of anti-terror police?

🧑‍💼 Who Is Gitonga Mukunji?

Mukunji is the youthful and charismatic Member of Parliament for Manyatta Constituency in Embu County. Elected under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in the 2022 general elections, he quickly made a name for himself as one of President William Ruto’s staunchest defenders.

Known for championing youth empowerment, education reforms, and digital transformation in his constituency, Mukunji has been viewed as part of the “hustler nation” wave that promised to disrupt the old political order. At just over 30 years old, he has represented a new generation of leadership in Parliament.

🚨 The Arrest: What Happened?

Mukunji was arrested at around 3:00 PM on Saba Saba Day (July 7), a historic date known for civil protests and calls for democracy. He was initially booked at Kibii Police Station under OB No. 06/07/07/2025, and later transferred to Juja Police Station.

From there, he was taken into custody by the Anti-Terror Police Unit, sparking fears that he may be facing terrorism-related charges tied to the nationwide Saba Saba demonstrations, which turned chaotic in several towns.

⚖️ Is He Being Charged With Terrorism?

As of now, no official charges have been filed against Mukunji. However, police sources have hinted that the MP may be accused of inciting violence and potentially abetting criminal activities during the protests.

His legal team, led by Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, has raised red flags, alleging that the police have denied Mukunji access to legal counsel and that there may be an attempt to plant explosives or drugs in his vehicle.

Njiru stated:

“They are holding him unlawfully, and his car is still at the station. We fear they may tamper with evidence or plant something sinister.”

🔥 Political Tensions on the Rise

Mukunji’s arrest has deepened the political divide in Kenya, especially at a time when tensions over the Finance Bill 2024 and the government’s response to peaceful protests have already triggered unrest.

Some leaders are calling the arrest a targeted political move to silence youthful leaders who support the voice of the people. Others, particularly from the ruling coalition, insist that no one is above the law, and due process must be followed regardless of status.

🧭 What’s Next?

With Mukunji in custody and his whereabouts partially concealed, the public is demanding answers. His supporters are calling for his immediate release, while civil rights groups are demanding transparency and the protection of legal rights for all detained individuals.

Whether Mukunji is charged or released, his arrest has already sparked a national conversation about justice, abuse of power, and freedom of expression in a democratic society.

📝 Final Word

Gitonga Mukunji's case is no longer just about one MP—it has become a symbol of Kenya’s broader struggle between authority and accountability, between security and civil liberty.

As we wait for clarity, one question lingers:
Is Mukunji a criminal—or a casualty of politics
