Mediamax (K24, People Daily, Milele FM, Kameme FM) fires 90% of it’s staff
Mediamax Network Limited has carried out yet another massive round of job cuts — the sixth in just four years — as it moves to restructure operations under mounting financial strain.
The company, which owns K24 TV, People Daily, Milele FM, and Kameme FM, issued a notice on August 11, 2025, informing employees of impending redundancies. Reports indicate that the retrenchment, affecting nearly every department, has wiped out about 90% of K24’s newsroom, including prominent English and Swahili anchors, producers, and the entire sports desk.
The exercise, finalized between July 15 and August 15, 2025, highlights Mediamax’s urgent efforts to reduce expenses and adjust to shifting market realities. Similar workforce reductions have also been witnessed at Nation Media Group and Standard Group in recent years.
According to the internal memo, the layoffs were triggered by a cocktail of challenges: harsh economic conditions, reduced business volumes, shrinking advertising revenue, delayed payments from government, and strict regulations on betting advertisements. In addition, the rise of digital platforms has disrupted traditional media consumption, forcing legacy outlets into drastic survival measures.
This latest downsizing reflects the broader turbulence rocking Kenya’s mainstream media industry as it struggles to adapt to declining revenues and evolving audience behavior.
