Alarm as MPs Find Leaking Roof at State House
MPs Find Leaking Roof, Poor Security at State House Nakuru
Alarm has been raised over the state of Nakuru State House, with lawmakers flagging concerns about leaking infrastructure and inadequate security.
The revelations followed an inspection by the Administration and Internal Security Committee of Parliament. Committee Chair Gabriel Tongoyo confirmed that MPs visited the residence to assess the progress of refurbishment works, only to find several shortcomings that questioned its readiness as a presidential residence.
State House Hospitality Manager Julius Kiptoo added that the facility faced structural and technical challenges, particularly the leaking roof and weak security systems. He noted that limited budgets had slowed down efforts to resolve these issues.
The visit formed part of the committee’s oversight role to ensure presidential residences remain at optimal standards. Their findings will be tabled in Parliament for debate and may be factored into the supplementary budget for funding.
Between 2021 and 2023, Nakuru State House has already received over Ksh240 million in allocations for upgrades, but officials say more money is still needed to complete the works.
The residence was scheduled to host major functions this year, including the winners of the Kenya National Drama and Film Festival 2025. However, President William Ruto has rarely used the Nakuru residence in 2025, opting instead for Nairobi.
Concerns over the facility come months after the government increased the State House budget by Ksh3.81 billion in the Supplementary Estimates Budget II for 2024/25, a move Treasury said was necessary to cover shortfalls in operations and maintenance.
