Bungoma: DCI Officer Accidentally Opens Fire in Court, Injures 5

A routine session at the Bungoma Law Courts turned chaotic after a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer accidentally discharged his firearm, leaving five people injured.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning inside High Court Number 2, where the officer was attending a case. Police reported that the officer’s Ceska pistol fired a round that ricocheted within the courtroom, striking officers and civilians nearby.

Bungoma County Police Commander Adamson Njagi confirmed the incident, saying one prison officer sustained a chin injury, two male civilians and a female civilian were wounded, while the officer himself suffered a minor hip injury.

All the victims were rushed to hospital and are in stable condition. Investigators have since secured the courtroom and launched inquiries into how the mishap occurred, as well as reviewing safety procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The incident has reignited debate on firearm handling protocols within court premises, coming just over a year after the tragic shooting of Magistrate Monica Kivuti at Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi.
