CCM’s Hussein Mwinyi Declared Winner of Zanzibar Presidential Election

The Zanzibar Electoral Commission announced that Hussein Ali Mwinyi, representing the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, had been elected President of Zanzibar after securing about 76.27 percent of the total votes. He received roughly 380,000 votes, defeating long-time opposition leader Seif Sharif Hamad of ACT Wazalendo, as well as other candidates from CUF and Chadema.

Before his election, Dr. Mwinyi served as Tanzania’s Minister of Defence. He is also the son of former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who led the nation from 1985 to 1995.

Following the announcement, CCM expressed gratitude to the people of Zanzibar for their support, thanking voters for choosing the party and electing Hussein Mwinyi as the new president of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.

Mwinyi’s victory extends CCM’s long-standing political dominance in the semi-autonomous islands. Zanzibar has often experienced periods of political tension and violence during elections, largely fueled by opposition calls for greater independence from mainland Tanzania.

According to Zanzibari law, once election results are declared by the electoral commission, they are final and cannot be challenged in court. This has raised concerns among human rights groups, especially after the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights previously recommended that Tanzania allow citizens to legally contest election outcomes. However, the country later withdrew from certain provisions of the court’s jurisdiction.
