Inside Odinga Family: Meet Raila’s Siblings Who’ve Not Been in the Spotlight
When Raila Amolo Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, enormous sorrow rippled across Kenya. But beyond the public mourning, many wondered: who are the quieter faces behind this powerful political dynasty? The relatives who seldom take the stage, whose stories form the deep roots of the Odinga family.
Raila was born into a large family, one rich with history, struggle, and commitment to public service. His father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, was a key figure in Kenya’s journey to independence — and a man with seventeen children from four marriages. Among them were many siblings from the maternal line of his first wife, Mary Odhiambo Odinga. Some of these siblings became well known; others, not so much — but all shaped the family in their own way.
Here are some of the Odinga siblings you may not have heard much about:
-
Ngire “Omuodo” Agolla Odinga — Born shortly after Oburu, Omuodo was known as thoughtful and serious. He died in 1983, young, before ever stepping into the political limelight. His memory lives on in family stories as “the intellectual one.”
-
Dr. Wenwa Akinyi Odinga — A scholar and diplomat, Wenwa has carried out work in education and public service away from the glare of headlines. She served as Kenya’s Consul-General in Los Angeles, choosing service over spectacle.
-
Beryl Achieng Odinga — She has kept her life private. Very little is known about her public endeavors. Those close to her describe her as someone who values community and family above fame.
-
Fredrick Odima Odinga — Fredrick’s life was cut short in 1975. Though he never made public speeches or held office, those who remember him speak of promise and youth.
-
Master Omondi Oginga — Born and deceased in infancy, Omondi’s short life is among the many early losses in the Odinga family. Though his time was brief, his existence is still part of the tapestry.
-
Shadrack Osewe Odinga — Quiet and gentle, Shadrack stayed away from politics. He died in 1999. Within the family, he is remembered for kindness rather than public achievement.
Then there are the siblings who, while more known, still balance public roles with private lives:
- Oburu Oginga — The eldest of the siblings from Mary Odhiambo’s line. A long-standing figure in Kenyan politics, he has often worked alongside Raila in various capacities.
- Ruth Odinga — Following in some of the footsteps of her brothers, Ruth has served in public office, earning a reputation for compassion and advocacy, especially in her home county.
Even so, many among the Odinga siblings never asked for headline space. They taught, served quietly, cared for each other, stayed in the communities, supported causes behind the scenes. Their influence wasn’t about fame; it was about steady presence and the lessons they passed down.
As the country reflects on Raila’s life and all he meant to Kenya, perhaps we should also remember those other Odingas — the siblings not always in view, but whose lives helped shape a family, and through them, a nation.
