Why Mbeere North Is Still Behind in School Development

Why Mbeere North Is Still Behind in School Development

Each constituency in Kenya received at least KSh 160 million from the CDF in 2025, yet Mbeere North’s school infrastructure is still lagging. Classrooms and other school buildings are poorly constructed, and learning materials are scarce.

Harsh Environmental Challenges:
The region is semi-arid, with frequent droughts and crop failures. This forces leaders to divert much of the CDF to emergency food aid and small water projects, which are necessary but often take priority over building schools.

Limited National Support:
Mbeere North has historically been marginalized by the national government. Budgets are smaller, infrastructure projects are slower, and technical support is limited. Areas like Kiharu or Embu South, with fertile lands and better support, can focus on building and upgrading classrooms without constant emergencies.

CDF Constraints:
Even with available funds, most CDF money goes to bursaries for needy students, leaving less for tangible school infrastructure like classrooms. This makes development slower and less visible compared to other regions.

Solutions and Hope for the Future:
There is hope for Mbeere North’s schools. The national government recently injected close to Sh 500 million into the Kanyuambora Irrigation Project, boosting agriculture, reducing poverty, and improving livelihoods. As households become more economically stable, more resources can be directed to school infrastructure.

The county and national governments should continue supporting the constituency by:

  • Investing in large-scale dams, irrigation schemes, and water storage projects.
  • Ensuring dedicated funding for classrooms, desks, and learning materials.
  • Monitoring and ensuring transparency in CDF use to maximize impact.

With continued support and strategic investments, Mbeere North children can finally get the quality education they deserve. 🌱
