DP's Newton Karish Speaks After Defeat in Mbeere North By-Election, Sends Message on Court Battle
United Opposition candidate Newton Karish has appealed to his supporters to remain peaceful and patient as he moves to challenge the outcome of the highly competitive Mbeere North by-election.
On December 4, the Democratic Party candidate addressed his supporters for the first time since the November 27 poll, ending a five-day silence after narrowly losing to UDA’s Leonard Wa Muthende. Karish expressed deep appreciation for everyone who stood by him throughout the election period.
“I urge all of you to stay calm, maintain peace and be patient as we take the necessary steps to seek justice regarding the by-election outcome,” he stated.
The message came only hours after two Mbeere North voters filed an election petition seeking to nullify Wa Muthende’s win and push for a fresh election.
According to the petitioners, Wa Muthende was allegedly not a registered voter in the constituency, raising questions about his eligibility to contest.
Karish, who earned 15,308 votes compared to Wa Muthende’s 15,802, celebrated his supporters for believing in his vision despite the narrow defeat.
“Today, I celebrate you—the peasants, the youth, the women, the elders and every resident who believes in a better, brighter Mbeere North. Together, we have shown that when people stand united, nothing is impossible,” he wrote.
The by-election has been surrounded by accusations from both political sides.
The United Opposition claims the poll was plagued by irregularities such as voter bribery, pre-marked ballots and intimidation. Meanwhile, UDA has countered with its own allegations, accusing the opposition of voter harassment during the election.
Despite the tension, Karish reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the residents of Mbeere North. He promised to maintain integrity, humility and inclusivity as the legal battle unfolds.
